William Roache acquitted of all charges

The verdict for William Roache's trial has been brought down. BBC reports that he has been cleared and found not guilty of all charges.

He had been cleared of one indecent assault charge a few weeks ago but the trial continued for four more plus two counts of rape, all of which allegedly happened between 1965 and 1971.

During the trial, several cast members testified on his behalf and expressed suprise that these charges were laid at all. Ken Farringdon, who played Billy Walker, said "It's a mystery where this has come from." Michael Le Vell who was cleared of similar charges last year, says he's delighted.

William Roache did not answer reporters' questions but said: "In these situations there are no winners... we should be much kinder to ourselves." He added: "If you'll excuse me, I need to get back to work."

ITV has said they will be speaking with Bill Roache soon to discuss plans to bring him back into Coronation Street.
