Faye Brookes opens up about relationship with Gareth Gates

Faye Brookes, who plays Kate Connor in Coronation Street, is on the front of this week's OK! magazine along with her fella, singer Gareth Gates.
Faye and Gareth talk to the mag about their relationship and in typically OK! style, they (and this is in OK-ese, not my words... "explained their romance is seriously intense."

Faye says: "Our relationship's always fiery because there's so much love there and so much passion. And because we have limited time with each other each week, there's an added pressure as we want it to be perfect. When you love each other so much, things get heightened. It's amazing."

Gareth said:"We're both quite needy, sensitive people and, as we don't spend every second together, we thrive on needing each other's attention. I think that happens within every relationship. Jealousy finds its way. We get jealous of the time we spend with other people; it's not because we don't trust each other."

And if you like that sort of thing, there's more over at OK including a video of the two of them in bed the morning after Faye won her NTA award for Best Soap Newcomer last month.

Coronation Street double epsiode review – Monday 20 Feb

Our blogger Rachel Stevenson normally writes her fantastic Monday night episode reviews but is away on holiday. While she's been away, Coronation Street Blog reader Ryan Oxley kindly offered to step into Rachel's shoes to bring you his review of Monday night's episodes.

And so, it's over to Ryan...

The birth of a Baby, the death of a rat (Ouroborus)

Well here it is, my third and final review of the Monday night double episode while Rachel has been on holiday. Treading the cobbles of the Coronation Street Blog has been a delicious delight - like one of Betty's Hotpots.

A familiar theme, maybe a motif, threaded through tonight’s brilliant Corrie double. A maternalistic streak that favoured Leanne, Toyah, Sarah and Eva, and sadness for Michelle as ashes were scattered on one of Corrie's finest (and incredibly upsetting) storylines. Also, another unexpected death that spelt the end of an era. Greek mythology isn’t something I’d ever associate with Corrie but tonight’s double (including the tale of the giant causeway) had a mythical if not ouroborus air to it.

Following Friday's ‘night out’ we learn that Bethany has slept with sinister Nathan and without protection. Is this insidious storyline about to reap another unplanned pregnancy? Sarah seethes upon learning the ‘truth’, and her mothering instincts are troubled in handling the situation.

Toyah’s IVF battle sees Peter borrow money from Ken to book a conveniently cancelled IVF consultation and Eva ‘loses’ track of Liam who races to the bus stop, wishing to visit his imprisoned mum. The lad is consoled by a heavily pregnant Leanne, and Little Liam’s woes continue as we learn he caused Darryl the rat to escape into the street. Leanne is still distraught at her unified sisters, and an argument explodes with Toyah, as they leave Victoria Court and head into the lift.

Steve and Michelle retreat to Anglesey, the shores of Wales, to scatter baby Ruairi’s ashes. We are treated to a beautiful location shoot, the strong winter wind and the tides in unison to the couples shattered emotions. The broken couple both stare out poignantly at the distant horizon. This could be foreshadowing for their relationship, as we already know; another McDonald baby is about to be born.  It’s worth mentioning that this was another heartfelt and understated performance from Kym Marsh and Simon Gregson. ‘Rover’ running around the beach added a subtle comedic touch. Corrie at its finest.

Back on the street and with a rat now firmly on the loose, Toyah and Leanne become stranded as the lift draws to a halt (no alarm in Victoria Court?) and Leanne’s waters inconveniently break. Hero of the hour (or of any hour in Weatherfield) Robert races to the rescue. A power cut has shut the lift off!
With Leanne’s contractions getting stronger, Weatherfield’s medical marvel Rana is also on the scene. As Peter visits the IVF appointment on his own, Toyah turns midwife, unworried and seamlessly, a newfound career perhaps for councilor come barmaid, Toyah?

As the emergency services arrive, new ‘father’ Nick races to the scene, and by now, the baby has already entered the world. In tragic comic effect, it transpires that Darryl the rat had left the world by causing the power cut, as Baby Oliver has entered it, ‘He went out with a bang’ enthused Tim, as you would with 50,000 vaults through you’. A birth that will undoubtedly cause ‘explosions’ in future episodes?

A brilliant double tonight but I’m left thinking about the death of Darryl the rat, the demise of a Coronation Street legend. Almost ouroborus, or ‘one out, one in’ as my nan would say.

Coronation Street spoiler: Sally on the war path

Next week in Coronation Street we'll see Sally on the war path after a builder working for Phelan harasses daughter Rosie.

Inside Soap magazine reveal that Sally forms a protest with some of the women of the Street, gets herself a megaphone and screams all kinds of things through it at the building site.

It all starts after Sally finds out (from Anna, of all people!) that Rosie has brought drugs into the country from Miami.  After Sally gets over the initial shock of it all, she's upset that Rosie couldn't confide in her and determines to become closer to Rosie.  Rosie then tells her mum that she's been lying about her luxurious lifestyle while in the US to avoid letting Sally down.

The protest becomes Sally's way of showing Rosie that she supports her and loves her.

Rob Mallard: "I'd love Denise Black to return to Corrie!"

There's an excellent interview in Inside Soap magazine this week with Rob Mallard, who plays Daniel Osbourne in Coronation Street.

I won't blog the whole interview, because it's definitely worth buying the magazine to read what Rob has to say over two pages.  But in a nutshell, the highlights of the interview for me were the following:

Rob says the best thing about being in Corrie is hearing 57 years worth of stories from Bill Roache (Ken Barlow).  "I do feel very privileged to be hearing them from him," he says.

He says he's had a good response from the public after his interview with Gay Times.

When Daniel had to punch the wall the other week in Corrie after his fight with Chesney, Rob says: "There was actually a little square piece of wall made out of polystyrene, which was screwed into the real wall to absorb the shock.  I mean, I was still hitting a brick wall underneath, but they didn't tell me that until afterwards!"

And finally, Rob says this about the possible return of his on-screen mum, Denise Osbourne:

"I would love it if she were to come back to Corrie! I've been a fan of Denise for a few years and when the audition for the role of Daniel first came up, one of the reasons I was so keen to win the role was because of the people I'd get to work with.  I knew I'd get to do scenes with the Barlows, but there was also the possibility I'd get to work with Denise at some point down the line. And that wasn't something I was going to turn my back on!"

Coronation Street spoiler: Sinead pregnant - but who's the dad?

Next week in Coronation Street we'll see Sinead confide to Beth that she's pregnant.

But who will the daddy be - Chesney or Daniel?

Inside Soap magazine reveal that Sinead takes a pregnancy test and confides in aunty Beth when the test results come back positive. But is Sinead up the duff by Daniel or in the pudding club by Chesney?

Sinead decides to keep quiet about the baby bombshell until she weighs up all her options.  But Daniel gets a shock when he finds the pregnancy test in the flat and realises it's positive.

All of this unfolds next week when Ken continues to give Daniel an ear-bashing about Sinead not being good enough for him and how he should make something of his life.  What will Daniel do if it's his? And what will Chesney say if it turns out he's the dad?

Coronation Street spoiler: Toyah to dump Peter?

Inside Soap magazine reveal paparazzi pictures this week showingn Toyah with her husband Toby - and he's got his arm around her.

Now then, it doesn't say what might or might not be going on in the paparazzi snaps. And, it's fair to say, Toyah doesn't look best pleased to be with Toby, even though he's holding her around the shoulder gently with his arm.

Perhaops Toby just wants to talk to Toyah, to beg her to try again, and give their marriage another go? Or perhaps she dumps Peter after she finds out he's been seeing mystery woman Chloe again.

Oh yes, you can read all about that here.

Anglesey appears in Coronation Street tonight

Tonight in Coronation Street, we'll see Steve and Michelle scatter baby Ruari's ashes. The poignant sequence was filmed in Aberffraw on the south west coast of Anglesey earlier this year.

Kym Marsh and Simon Gregson were spotted filming a harrowing miscarriage story on Anglesey last month, reports The Daily Post.

The heartbreaking scene - where their characters head to a cliff edge to scatter their tragic baby son’s ashes - will be aired on ITV tonight.

A baby memorial service organised by the Chester and North Wales Miscarriage Support Group will be held at Chester Cathedral on April 18.  The service begins at 11.30am. For more information, call Karen Dalton at the Chester and North Wales Miscarriage Support Group on 01829 270083.

Former Corrie actress writes her debut novel

Former Coronation Street actress Rita May has turned her hand to writing with a comedy debut novel

Rita, who formerly walked Weatherfield’s famous streets as Connie Rathbone, has decided that after a long and successful career on screen, making the jump to writing is an ideal next step.

Her first comedy novel, Barry and Bev, follows a community living in the north of England.

Kenthorpe Working Men’s Club in the north of England is in dire financial difficulties. To try and help the situation, the Committee come up with emergency measures, including a top-class act booked for Saturday night concerts.

As word spreads, the number of punters sharply increases. This causes problems for some of the members’ wives, as they can’t get into the club early enough to get a seat. The club’s ‘Men Only’ room is frequented by a few of the older club members, but Rule No. 57, which bars women from the room, still stands from when the club was built in 1932.  The women decide to challenge this as seats are always available in the ‘Men Only’ room, which leads to a standoff...

Keep Fit with Corrie: Week Two - Kym Ryder

Gemma and Michael over at Conversation Street, the Corrie podcast, have been keeping fit the Corrie way!  In week one, they did the Molly Dobbs work out and you can read all about that here.

Every week we’re chronicling our adventures with our Corrie fitness project, as we work our way through as many exercise DVDs as we can find featuring cast from the show. It’s been difficult to keep the weight loss up this week, especially with the Valentine’s Day temptation of choccies and meals out, but we’ve still managed to chip away a few pounds each. In addition to the Corrie DVDs, we’ve also given a Zumba one a try on a couple of evenings – this has fast become one of one of Gemma’s favourites, but with Michael having all the coordination and grace of Stan Ogden after a heavy drinking session in the Rovers, it’s not gone down quite as well with him!

For this week’s blog, we’re tackling Kym Marsh’s first workout DVD – Kym Ryder’s Burn & Firm Workout. She also has a second DVD called Kym Marsh Power Sculpt, which we’ll get to on another week!
Kym’s Burn & Firm Workout was released in 2006, and features her trainer, Paul Younane. Those who have followed Kym’s career from the very beginning will know she came to fame in the first series of a show called Popstars. The programme followed the formation of the group Hear’Say, and Kym was selected by the judges to join thanks to her talent at singing and dancing. Famously, she was told by her manager, Nigel, to lose weight, which caused a lot of controversy in the press. Kym mentions this in her introduction, setting the tone for the light-hearted and breezy manner that she maintains throughout. The DVD was released in the same year that Kym was hired to work in Coronation Street, so the approach to this is very much one of a dancing background, as she was obviously far more famous for this than her acting at this point in her career.

As with many of the DVDs that we’ve worked out with, the trainer is the main presenter, and Kym chimes in with various suggestions and comments throughout. She’s more hands on than some of the other celebs, though, telling you to watch out for your knees going over your toes, and the like.

Paul’s approach to fitness is a bit like what your mother used to tell you about making a face when the wind changes. The warmup hammers home his concept of posture-setting, where you engage your abs and pull your shoulders back when working out. He repeatedly suggests that the body you work out in is the body you’ll end up with, and whilst good form is essential to prevent injury during workouts, we’ve never heard anyone before or since suggest that setting your body in a certain position is going to set it to that posture when you’re finished. Intriguing…

The other gimmick in this workout is that it utilises household objects to help your fitness. Kym mentions that she and Paul did a lot of working out in the park, which they’ve adapted to the front room. The sofa is used for some exercises in the ‘sofa-tone’ section, and there’s even a ‘pillow-boxing’ segment. Our reactions to this varied. Gemma thought it was a bit unnecessary and over-complicated everything, because most of the exercises didn’t need equipment and were better off without (for example, press up and chest flies, both of which work just fine on the floor). Michael, however, enjoyed the novelty. Kym and Paul also suggest using cans of beans or water bottles instead of weights, but we’d both say that if you want to seriously get into getting fit, buying proper hand weights makes life so much easier – and you can increase the weights to improve your fitness as you go on.

As Kym’s background is in music, it was really surprising how mediocre the soundtrack was for this DVD. In fact, the uninspiring, naff music was a big part of how boring it could get. Combined with repetitive movements, there was little to stimulate your mind during the sessions, and they really dragged on. There are six main sections, plus a warm up and body set, and a cool down. On the whole, we found the ones in the first half of the DVD more enjoyable than those towards the end. Each segment lasts around ten minutes, and you can pick and choose your sections to customise your workout.

The fat busting workout comes straight on from the warm up, and consists mostly of holding weights whilst punching or moving your arms, and kicking or bouncing around. The sofa-tone is the aforementioned section where you do strength exercises using the sofa, or a chair. Box and burn is cardio boxing with squats and weights added in for good measure. Pillow boxing is a complete waste of time where they spent five minutes showing you different ways to kick and punch a pillow that someone else is holding. Not only do they not even make a sequence you can follow at home, as with every other section, but they assume you’ll have a helper who wants to work out with you whilst doing absolutely nothing for their own fitness. Really, this felt like it should have been an extra rather than thrown in during the workout session. It even ends with Kym and her fitness model attacking Paul and pushing him on the sofa (spoiler!) which would have been cute and funny if you only had to watch it once in a ‘here are some ideas for pillow boxing extra’, but not three or four times a week for a month!

Aero dance feels like Kym’s pet project as she takes control of the section, formulating a little dance that you follow along with to a weird Baby Elephant Walk-esque track. Paul, meanwhile, joins in and repeatedly comments that he’s adapting it for blokes, by doing things like punching instead of pushing. Kym’s po-faced look, occasionally breaking into grins, is adorable, and reminded us of the girls’ expressions in Corrie Funk and Fit. This dance is the same sequence repeated twice, and actually repeats some of the same footage the second time around, which is weird. The final section is just abs, with a couple of fun paired crunches thrown in, where you’re sitting opposite your partner, legs interlocked.

We didn’t really rate this DVD too highly, it was fairly dull and not very challenging. The trainer is quite serious, but we enjoyed the focus on Kym (and we’re sure that most guys giving it a go will appreciate the close up of the bum flexing in the warm-up section!) The claim is that you can do this workout and lose 12lbs in four weeks, but we’d imagine that you’d need to do the full six sets plus warmup and cooldown to lose that much, depending, of course, on your diet! Don’t forget that often-repeated truism, weight-loss is 80% diet and 20% exercise! There is a six-minute diet chat as an extra in which Kym speaks about her bulimia and her love of chocolate. Honestly, there’s nothing new in here and there’s definitely nothing specific enough to be useful. It really just boils down to ‘eat healthily and exercise’.

All in all, Burn & Firm is fairly dated (Kym’s latest DVD is far superior in terms of effectiveness and effort required), but if you’re a big fan, you might enjoy this as a blast from the past.

New plans spotted regarding set expansion

User 'Hellingly' on Digital Spy, spotted this new application for a set store, which seems to hint that we'll be getting a new Street called 'Kitchener Street' behind Victoria Street, though this could just be a tentative name, the facade also seems to be a placeholder, but it's exciting news none the less!

Could this be the new street that we are being teased, or will this Kitchener Street just be used for when it's needed? The location of the set store would also be around the same place as the upcoming construction on Victoria Street.

Collecting Coronation Street: Autographs

I've always found autographs to be quite unusual. I myself have a great deal of them, whether it be from soap stars to actors, presenters to journalists. But when you think of it - they're just little bits of card with a person's face on, scribbled over with their name. Certainly nothing exciting or fun – you can't even do much with them other than put them in an album or frame them.

Having said that though, autographs are a vital part of my Coronation Street Collection. If you didn't know already through following my Twitter or the Corrie Collection Twitter, I have an awful lot of Coronation Street memorabilia, and when it comes to autographs, I literally have hundreds of them! So much so that when they're arriving through the post each week I simply do not have the time to update them all onto my Collection website.

A number of the newer autographs in my collection.
Now the biggest problem when collecting autographs is almost definitely the authenticity - especially when buying through online auction sites such as eBay. I'm always so wary when purchasing autographs that do not explicitly say whether they are authentic or printed. I see almost no value in a printed autograph, though sadly for older castcards a printed autograph is all that you can find. There are also a great deal of forgeries online, though unless you have a great deal of expertise in this there are no ways to avoid it. The only real way to know that you have the actor's autograph is by writing to them directly.

Since the show's inception, the offices at Granada and ITV have issued preprinted autograph cards at request. For some autograph collectors, the notion of receiving many cards in bulk (albeit printed) is thrilling, especially for collectors who can't stand to write to each individual cast member or wait time for them to receive and respond to their letter.

Classic castcards and letters in my collection.
Personally, when obtaining autographs I prefer to write to the actors/actresses direct. I often find that you get a more personalised response. I once got a lovey letter from Sue Nicholls who plays Audrey thanking me for my letter and wishing me a Happy Christmas. If writing isn't your thing, there are literally hundreds of eBay auctions listing autographed cards individually, or as bundles.

If you'd like to write to the cast to get an autograph yourself, send your letter alongside a stamped self-addressed envelope to:

Actor's name
c/o ITV Coronation Street
Trafford Wharf Road
Stretford
Greater Manchester
M17 1AU
UK

Please allow some time for an actor to respond - always remember that their schedule is so hectic and given the popularity of our favourite show, tonnes of letters will come flooding through the gate at ITV each week.

This is just the first of my 'Collecting Coronation Street' blogs, please let me know what aspect of my collection you'd like to see me cover next.
