5 Things We Learned in Corrie This Week

It's been another busy week in Coronation Street this week. Time then, to look back at 5 things we learned that we didn't know this time last week in Weatherfield.

1. Adam Barlow's aftershave

"Could you and your aftershave do one?" Johnny Connor asked Adam when he was in the factory office. Much was made of Adam's aromatic aftershave and the fact he was wearing far too much of it, as those types like to do. It was an interesting point though - for else how do we know what the characters smell like? We see them, we hear them, we can usually guess their emotions from what they say, or keep to themselves. But we don't know what they smell like. And perhaps for that we should remain grateful, who knows?

2. Roy serves an unlikely sandwich

£4.95 for a Brie and Rocket sandwich might be the thing at the Bistro, but in Roy's Rolls?  And it isn't the price that's the shocker, here, it's the filling itself.  Brie and Rocket?  In Roy's?  I don't think so.

3. Beth's fried eggs are evil

Poor Kirky, he damaged his tooth eating one of Beth's fried eggs. What on earth is she frying them in?

4. Liz is a legend

Okay, so we may have already know that Liz is a legend but what a send-off she got in the Rovers Return as she handed over her beloved pub to Toyah and Peter. An alcoholic in charge of the pub? What would Blanche say? What could possibly go wrong?

5. Garlic bread is the snack of all faiths

Good old Eileen, at least she made an effort. Putting on a Jewish tea feast for Nicola Rubinstein who came calling with a DNA test for Patrick.

Mystery of Nick's two flats in Victoria Court

Nick sold both of his flats this week.

Wait. What?

Since when did Nick Tilsley own *two* flats in Victoria Court? I remember he moved in and was renting the one Dev owned and the other one was Carla's. Johnny was definitely renting hers, I remember him saying he was moving into "Carla's" flat.

Did Nick buy it off her to help her financially? When did he buy Dev's flat? I want to know if I missed something and I'm sitting here grumbling for nothing or if all this was behind the scenes, never mentioned, or if the writers just plain forgot.

Corrie weekly update: End of an Era at The Rovers Return

Corrie weekly updates from 1995
All the wit and warmth of Weatherfield
None of the waffle
Available from amazon.co.uk or amazon.com

It’s been an exciting week on Corrie as Bethany’s grooming storyline starts to come to a close. This week saw young Craig bringing corrupt copper Neil to justice.  Craig tapes Neil’s words when Neil tells him that Bethany got what she deserved, her and all the slappers like her. Craig replays the recording to D. C. Leigh and Bethany gives a full statement. There was some amazing acting, especially from Tina O’Brien as Sarah Platt. I rate her as one of the UK’s best actresses. When mum Beth finds out what Craig’s gone and done, she asks if her Craigy is in love with Bethany, which he denies, but we the viewers know there’s something deeper going on in Craig’s heart.

Elsewhere this week, Brian’s appointed chief litter inspector and armed with a loud hailer he berates everyone he can find on the street for dropping litter. When Roy buys a new salt and pepper set and loses the receipt, Brian finds it on the ground and fines Roy. It’s preposterous stuff and shows how ridiculous Brian can be, but there’s one in every town, or at least there is in ours.

Eva continues with her ridiculous fake pregnancy scam and tells Aidan that she can’t work at the sewing machine any more so he promotes her into the office and above Jenny flaming Bradley’s head.  Well, Jenny’s not best pleased, as you can imagine. I’d have much more respect for Eva if she just chucked Aidan out. In fact, this stupid pregnancy storyline is making me dislike Eva a lot and seems out of character for her. Anyway, Adam and Eva work together to further scam Aidan out of cash. Eva just wants revenge on Aidan for cheating with Maria but Adam’s got much bigger things on his mind in the shape of taking Underworld from the Connors.

Over in the hair salon, Gail tells Audrey that Nick’s sold both of his flats in Victoria Court. Johnny Connor’s bought one of them and the other’s been bought by an investor who already owns property there. Audrey’s dismayed to hear this as it means Nick’s not planning on returning to Weatherfield any time soon.

And finally, this week, it was the end of an era as Liz McDonald left the Rovers Return when newcomers Toyah and Peter took over. Toyah made a good speech, saluting the women of the Rovers from Annie Walker to Bet Lynch through to Vera Duckworth and Liz. What? No mention of St Ella of the Back Room?  Liz asked Toyah if she’d look after a plant in the back yard at the Rovers that she bought when baby Ruari died and Toyah said yes, of course. Making Toyah the custodian of the memory of a lost baby was poignant stuff indeed.

Will Liz survive in her new job at the medical centre where nasty boss Moira (who isn’t a battleaxe as ITV have said – she’s a bully) rules the roost? She’s like a fish out of water so far, is Liz. I hope it won’t be long before she’s back behind the bar where she belongs.
And that’s just about that for this week.

Does Craig really love Bethany - Yay or Nay?

Last night in Coronation Street we saw what a star young Craig Tinker really is, if we were ever in doubt.

And as mum Beth quizzed her son about his relationship with Bethany, Craig kept on insisting that they were just good friends. He said that he would have helped out anyone in the same situation, no matter who they had been.

Beth was sure though that Craig has feelings for Bethany and it was clear to us viewers that there is more than just friendship on Craig's mind. But I don't think I want Craig and Bethany to get together. Let them just be friends, true friends that will always look out for each other.

But what do you think? Do you think Craig really loves Bethany? Yay or Nay?

Confessions of a Coronation Street Tour Guide (3 of 5)

Here we go with the continuation of Aussie Pete's Confessions of a Coronation Street Tour Guide.

Missed Day 1 and Day 2 of our Confessions of a Coronation Street Tour Guide?
Check them out here - Day 1 and Day 2

Can you tell us any funny stories from behind the scenes as a tour guide?

The early tours were filled with nerves, hoping I didn’t make a mistake and be corrected by a fan of the show. Many fans know the most minute of details and were quick to correct if the wrong thing was said, however being the Corrie Fan I am, I didn’t have this problem… though a few did try to correct me with their incorrect facts! Being the only Aussie there (we did briefly have another Aussie in the shop, however she didn’t stay long), I couldn’t help but playing up the Aussie language. That’s where my nickname came from, ‘Aussie Pete.’ I used it a few times as a laugh and it stuck! Many a time I had guests asking me what an Aussie was doing in the cobbles and shouldn’t I be doing tours of the ‘Neighbours’ and ‘Home and Away’ sets. The amount of times I was asked to ‘throw another shrimp on the barbie’ was madness! Besides, we call the prawns!

On another tour, there was a woman who looked strikingly familiar. She was with a group of people and in the end, I asked if she realised how much she looked like …Sally Dynevor aka Sally Metcalfe! Her family burst out laughing and told me that they say it to her all the time! We even had a photo together!

One other hilarious moment came not on the tour, but at another well-known Corrie-related place, sadly now closed too. That’s The Old Grapes pub, formerly owned by Our Vera, Liz Dawn. We’d had a staff meeting earlier in the day and headed there afterwards for a few drinks. Little did we know that Bruno Langley and a guy from that other southern show were at the venue too! Heading off to go home after a nice evening, my housemate and I (she was also a Tour Guide) began walking to the corner when we heard a woman start screaming!

We looked at each other and laughed, she’d just seen Bruno, and kept walking. The woman screamed again, so we stopped, turned around to see the commotion and we were greeted with the woman running… at us! She was screaming “Aussie Pete! Aussie Pete!” I was floored! The woman and her husband came up to us and said ‘You were my tour guide a few weeks ago! Oh my God my Mum would be so jealous!” The husband hid his face, he was really embarrassed. She then asked could I have a photo with her and a hug? How could I say no?!? The only time I’ve ever felt like a celebrity! I certainly went home with a big grin on my face that couldn’t be removed for days!

Tune in tomorrow for Day 4 with more memories from Aussie Pete.
