Corrie - a bum deal?

A guest Coronation Street Blog post from Katriel Costello

In our family we love to tell the story of the time we were watching Coronation Street with Granny, it was the Elsie Tanner days and the siren of the street appeared on screen wearing her petticoat. The sight of bare flesh and lace was too much for Gran, and she toddled towards the telly, ‘That’s it, it’s going off’ and off it went.

Now, call me a prude but when gnarly old Karl grasps Sunita’s jean-clad posterior as soon as they get behind closed doors I am my Grandmother’s granddaughter. The telly stays on but there is a narrowing of the eyes and an ‘eeww’.

It wouldn’t be so bad if Sunita hadn’t borrowed from Suzi Quatro’s wardrobe – from the 70s. She’s been strutting her slutty stuff in obscenely tight jeans bordered by a waistcoat that surely shrank in the wash. Never mind the fact that she’s cuckolding Dev;  pale blue, skin-tight jeans paired with black satin is an assault on the fashion senses.

Compare Sunita’s Rock Chick clobber to Eileen’s as she endures tortured goings on with Paul. Poor Eileen is forever leaning against cupboards – because at least they offer support, unlike crappest boyfriend ever Paul – swathed in punishing tents. We only wish someone would chuck one over Sunita.

We can only be thankful that it’s summer soon and we won’t be seeing Sunita in a fur coat, because we all know what that means…

Haha, so true, this whole affair storyline is terrible, I can't wait until Stella discovers what is going on so then we can move on

Watching Karl and Sunita reminds me of when I started clubbing years ago. There was always an older couple (40 was old then!)who had clearly just met at the bar and couldn't keep their hands off each other. Bum-grabbing might work with David and Kylie but desperate oldies at it hasn't got any easier on the eye.

Some of the Snarl criticism seems to originate from the prevailing ageism that suggests anyone over 30 should behave as if they have been welded into five chastity belts. But this is a gruesome advert for middle-aged passion. Apart from the actors being totally unable to convince me that they are remotely attracted to each other and the excruciating awkwardness of their scenes, the dialogue is so repetitive. Reminding each other that they shouldn't be doing this every time they meet is just meaningless episode filler.

And I am getting heartily sick of much younger women falling for Coronation Street’s ageing lotharios: Peter and Leanne/Carla, Brian and Julie, even Nick and Eva, since he looks 20 years older. Good on Audrey and Rita with their (slightly) younger men. Is it a coincidence that they are both pensioners?

Still chuckling about the Suzie Quatro comparison.

I really feel for the actors..this is painful to watch so I wonder how they must feel on the other side of the camera.

Shame on you Corrie writers. This is really really bad.

I actually shut my eyes and kept them closed the scene where Karl was grabbing Sunita's bottom. It was too awful!

I don't think Sunita and Karl have much chemistry as actors and I don't think the actress who plays Sunita plays the floozy convincingly.

The title "Bum deal" and a photo of Karl fondling his belt buckle while Sunita smirks in the foreground is not an image I need in my head. Eww.

I would love to drink at the rovers purely for the entertainment. Sunita and Karl are so blatantly obvious.

...Strutting her slutty stuff! Love it and too true! And where did those enormous bazookas come from...have they been under the corner shop counter all that time?! Not liking Karl and Sunita at all and normally Corrie does affairs brilliantly.
