I know a lot of you are struggling with the state of Coronation Street lately, judging from the many comments on recent posts. I agree there are one or two storylines that I find less than inspiring but overall, I'm still loving the show. Plot holes? Yep, we got them. Personality Fairy Transplants? Yep, got them too. Maybe I'm just too easy to please, but over all, Corrie still does it for me. I'm adding a bit of positivity to the stream, and discussing it on the State of the Street.

Finding the positive in Corrie

Well, glad you're happy, Tvor! Overall the show is fine. But I find I'm not bothered if I have to miss an episode or so. The wonderful, funny script about nothing in particular isn't in evidence so much and I find at the moment there is too much effort on 'blockbusters' and not enough of 'Proper Corrie'. Perhaps it's because it is too difficult to write and in comparison bank heists are easy?
Also, the gaping holes and Corrinaesia I find hard to forgive. I feel as though my loyalty to the programme is being exploited.
I've watched Corrie since I was knee high to a cough drop and will continue to. But there were some wonderful, simple story lines in the past such as the Rovers panto, and some classic conversations about not very much but which were perceptive and funny.
I miss that.
It must be hard to keep up the storyline momentum after the tram crash. We were spoiled. It was so good. There have been a couple of awkward storylines lately. I trust it will get back on track.
I find most of the storylines dark and disturbing. There doesn't seem to be one happy person on the street except Emily who is in LALA land anyway and Kirk who really has been cast as nothing but the villiage idiot, but it really is too much. It really is becoming more like the American soaps with each passing episode, and I don't watch those because they are so ridiculous so I doubt if I'll watch Corrie anymore. Thanks.
Ally Ross on TV in the Sun yesterday pretty much summed it up entitled "Saddest Decline of the Year" saying it has ruined its good characterds and introduced stupid ones , its lost its sense of humour and become every bit as miserable as EE: in a nutshell a depressing shambles. It says it all really.
the problem is the writers must come from terribly sad broken homes or be in terrible relationships. There has not been one marriage or relationship that has been true except perhaps the Bishop's and they killed Ernest off why early on. Every single one has an affair of some sort even Hayley and Roy and although I love to see Elizabeth Tan as being so beautiful an actress, that story line is ridiculous in such a small community. They have lost all sense of reality which is what made Corrie so popular in the beginning - the grittiness of the North - but they still haven't learnt from the years of Tracy in her bedroom listioning to tapes by ignoring so many characters including dogs at the expense of over exposure of others and living in a total fantasy world. The tram is up and running but apart from the day is started after the crash has anyone heard it? Does anyone catch the tram into town? No they use taxis and the bus. The bistro is full but no cars are parked anywhere around. The resident's cars are where? All these little things are building bricks in the story of the street but the writers have lost the plot IMHO.
It's a soap staple that there are very few happy marraiges. Roy and Hayley have had their bumps but nobody has had an affair there, though Hayley had a crush on someone in Africa. That wasn't the same thing. Cars never have been seen much on the street until they're needed. Yes i have heard the tram on occasion since it started up again. Maybe there isn't a nearby tram stop. I've been in Manchester and there isn't one on every corner like there are busses.
I miss the banter between Steve and Dev, between Steve, Eileen and Lloyd.....though I admit Sally and Kirk were hilarious and also his encounter with Audrey....more of that please. There is hope in Roy's Mom who could be the new 'one liner' lady taking over from Blanche. Get rid of Maria and Fiz and keep Eddie. Bring back Archie and Audrey's Dad. Bring back Pam and Bill.
The difference between now and previous dips in Corrie's standards is that I get the impresion that those in charge today do not value Corrie's strengths of witty, perceptive dialogue, realistic stories conjured from nothing and likeable but flawed, recognisable characters.
Instead they are just following the television fashion for sensational stories, scenes that would not tax the attention span of an infant with ADD and bringing in already well known actors. That formula might work for the London rubbish, but its going to kill Corrie.
I'm with you Adam Rekitt. It's just horrendous just now and I don't know how they're going to pull it back to anything like the way it was, because so much damage has been done. But like other viewers I'm hanging in there mean time and hoping they will find a way.
